Medicinal Plants

Some plants are used in herbalism and thought by our ancestors to have medicinal properties and over the years have adopted ayurvedic treatment to provide healing or relief to the ailing patients. Few plants or their phytochemical constituents have been proven to have medicinal effects by science.
Many herbs and spices used in cooking such as onion, garlic, ginger, turmeric, clove, coriander, fenugreek, bay leaf, asafoetida etc., are known to have medicinal properties. Ayurvedic medicine uses all of these either in diet or as medicine. The value of medicinal plants, herbs and spices as herbal remedies is being lost due to lack of awareness, growth-related exploitation, environment-unfriendly harvesting, loss of habitats and unmonitored trade. The result is many valuable medicinal herbs are becoming rare and precious information is lost. Preserving the knowledge of medicinal plants is crucial for future generations.
